Controversy over new technology and scanners.
Transcript
Before we had scanning, we had price guns.
And before we had price guns, pieces of masking tape.
Put masking tape on the item and write the price on it.
Really, I remember doing that. And yeah, and price guns were probably a controversy too.
So when we received orders, and in the new store, our orders were huge. We would sticker every single item. We had many pricing guns and it would go click, click, click, click. Every single product would be priced. It was laborious and it was a waste and messy and not particularly environmentally friendly to have all these sticky things everywhere.
And when there was a sale, you had to sticker over the sticker. And when the sale was over, you had to sticker it again. And we actually had a lot of folks on the grocery staff who were starting carpal tunnel syndrome. And we wanted to go to scanning. But we did have some pretty big protests. And there was definitely a membership contingent that was concerned that the effects of scanning and the radiation from that would be more harmful to them.
I know there are still some members that feel that way. And they still shop with us, you know. When we talk about it now, we laugh. And how is that even possible? Well, what were we thinking? Kick us and drag us into the future.
But, you know, now it's just, it is what it is. People don't think twice as far as I know. It's hard.
It can be a challenge to do it well. And for the most part, the co-op has done it well.
